Sleeping driver drifts across M1 before smashing into police

POLICE officers miraculously escaped serious injury after a sleeping driver smashed into their car on the M1 in Hertfordshire.

The snoozing motorist slammed into the back of a BMW police car while they were dealing with an incident at the roadside last night (January 9).

Officers from the Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire Road Policing Unit tweeted a photograph of the wrecked cop car.

“Luckily no one was hurt,” confirmed police following the smash which happened between junctions 9 and 10 at Redbourn.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers had just finished dealing with a motorist on the M1 when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and drifted onto the hard shoulder.

“They collided with the rear of the police vehicle. Luckily no one was hurt.

“One of the many dangers of being a traffic cop #dontdrivewhentired.”
