BOSSES at ITV have confirmed that England's semi-final World Cup game against Croatia was viewed more than 26 million times.
The broadcasters revealed that 26.6 million people tuned into the football game on Wednesday (July 11) as the nation came together to cheer on England.
A spokesman for ITV said: "Between kick off at 7pm and final whistle at 9.37pm an average audience of 24.3 million viewers were watching, an 81 per cent share of viewing.
The match average of 24.3 million viewers is bigger than the audiences to the Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies of London 2012, and Torvill and Dean in 1994 at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics.
Last night's audience of 24.3 million viewers is the highest football audience on a single channel ever.
The spokesman added: "The match also had 4.3 million simulcast requests on ITV Hub – a new record, the Hub's biggest ever number for live programming."
The channel's match coverage – from 6.45pm until 10.29pm – was watched by 20.2 million people.
