A LUCKY father pulled his 10-year-old son from his burning BMW car "just in time" after it burst into a fireball on the school run last October.
Aaron Gauci's BMW 3 series caught fire while he was driving less than 10mph on Kingston Road in Ewell, Surrey on Wednesday, October 31 2018.
Speaking exclusively to The Entertainment Gazette, Aaron said that he spotted early alarm bells when his in-car speakers "started making strange noises".
He said: "I had the for exactly a year and was driving home from picking my 10-year-old son up from school at less than 10mph in traffic.
"The car started to fill with smoke from several areas, mainly the boot. I managed to pull over and get my son out just in time."
Aaron, who is a firefighter, explained that his day job helped him spot the danger signs early and allowed him make sure everyone was safe.
The news comes after BMW recalled 1.6 million of its diesel-powered cars worldwide due to possible fluid leaks that pose a fire risk.
Cars affected all use BMW's four-and-six-cylinder diesel engines and were produced in factories between 2011 and 2017 – 268,000 cars are UK-registered.
This Is Money reported that BMW confirmed, in some cases, coolant could leak from the exhaust gas recirculation module, which is part of the emissions reduction system.
The leaks could combine with soot at high temperatures and lead to the intake manifold melting, which could in turn cause a fire to break out.
BMW has been approached by The Entertainment Gazette for a comment.
