A YOUNG child was saved from an East London river after he reportedly fell in during the late evening on Thursday, January 3.
Police officers were called to Barking Creek at around 7pm yesterday evening to reports of a young child in the water.
As police were first on the scene they attempted to save the boy. They climbed down the bank and threw him a rope to catch.
A spokesman for Barking and Dagenham Police told The Entertainment Gazette that colleagues from the London Fire Brigade later assisted them.
They said: "Officers climbed down the bank and secured the child with a throw line. Together with London Fire, we pulled the child to safety.
The 10-year-old boy was rushed to hospital by the London Ambulance Service with "non life changing / threatening injuries".
One local said that they are surprised that an incident like this has not happened before and that children are "always playing by the river".
They said: "Kids [are] always playing by the river, [it's] not helped by easy access via [an] unnecessary ladder."
The resident has called on local councillors to look at safety at Barking Creek and the surrounding area as "there are more kids around".
